Detailed Description:
- Psyllium Husk Seed consist of the eighth layer of dried ripe seeds of plantago Ovataforsk (Seed) and it has been cleaned free for all dust, agri farm fibers, wastes, mud, stones and iron particles.
- Psyllium Husks cover the seeds, which is the part of the plant used in foods. Psyllium husk seed contains glycosides and mucilage.
- Psyllium seeds contain about 19% fiber, 18.8% protein, and 10-20% triglycerides.
- Psyllium seed husk is 34% insoluble fiber and 66% soluble fiber, providing an optimal division of both types that make it a valuable food additive.
- Psyllium seed mucilage, consisting of polysaccharides, is a "soluble fiber," a category of food substances made famous from oat bran and certain legumes.
- The effect of soluble fiber in one tablespoon of psyllium is equal to fourteen tablespoons of oat bran.
- The seeds of the psyllium plant are non-toxic.
- The soluble fiber derived from psyllium seed husk is also known as psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid, psyllium hydrocolloid and psyllium seed gum. It is a white to cream colored, slightly granular powder with a slight acid taste.
- Psyllium seeds are sown at a rate of fifteen to thirty pounds per hectare, and they are mixed into the uppermost soil surface using a weed broom and then irrigated.
- Psyllium seeds may be marketed whole, or the husks, i.e., the seed coat, may be sold separately. Preparation of the seed coat is tedious, because cleaned seeds must be passed through stone and grinders and then sieved and screened repeatedly through a graded series of fine meshes.
- The characteristics of psyllium seed husks make them useful for any treatment that requires improvement or maintenance of transit time in the gastrointestinal tract, since the inert bulk of the husks helps provide a constant volume of solid material irrespective of other aspects of the diet or any disease condition of the gut.
- Psyllium Seed is considering as a good intestinal cleanser and stool softner. Psyllium Seed is one of the most popular fibers used. The seeds are primarily used in traditional herbal medicine. Psyllium seed husks are mainly used to treat constipation.
- Psyllium seeds are coated with mucilage, a natural gummy substance that does not dissolve in water. Instead, mucilage forms a thick, gooey mass when exposed to fluids. The body does not digest mucilage, so the resulting large soft mass moves through the intestines, usually also triggering intestinal muscle contractions. In addition, the mucilage forms a slick coating on the walls of the intestines. All of these effects help to prevent or relieve constipation.
- In India psyllium planting starts during the dry season. In France sowing starts in March after winter. Blooming of psyllium begins in two months after sowing. The psyllium seeds are harvested after about two months later.
- Psyllium seed harvesting is done using hand sickles; the spike of fruits is removed during early morning so that the wetness, caused by morning dew, keeps the spike from shattering.
- Psyllium seeds, less than three millimeters in length, are obtained by threshing and winnowing, causing the several seeds to be released from each small capsule.
Psyllium Seeds Habitat : Mediterranean region and commercially grown in north western India.
